If you’ve spent any time browsing a cannabis concentrates menu, you’ve noticed that live resin consistently costs more than shatter, crumble, or standard distillate. For a new concentrates buyer, that price difference can feel hard to justify without a clear explanation of what you’re actually getting for the extra money. For experienced users who have tried live resin once, the justification tends to be obvious.
This guide breaks down exactly what live resin is, how it’s made, and the five specific reasons it commands a premium — so you can decide with confidence whether it belongs in your regular rotation.
What Is Live Resin? A Quick Recap
Live resin is a cannabis concentrate produced by extracting cannabinoids and terpenes from cannabis plants that were frozen immediately after harvest — rather than going through the standard drying and curing process used for most cannabis products.
This single difference in the process — freezing fresh rather than drying — is the source of everything that makes live resin exceptional. When cannabis is dried and cured, a significant portion of the plant’s terpenes evaporate. The aromatic compounds that give each strain its distinctive smell, flavour, and effect profile are volatile — they escape into the air during the drying process, and there is no way to recover them once they’re gone.
Live resin captures the plant at its peak — at the precise moment when its terpene content is highest — and locks those terpenes into the final concentrate. The result is a product that tastes, smells, and behaves more like fresh cannabis than any dried and processed extract can achieve.

Reason 1: The Flavour Is in a Different League
This is the reason most concentrate users try live resin for the first time — and the reason most of them don’t go back to shatter or wax as their primary concentrate.
The flavour difference between a quality live resin and a standard BHO concentrate is not subtle. It is immediately and dramatically apparent. Where shatter might deliver a recognisable cannabis taste with broad earthy or fuel notes, a well-produced live resin delivers the specific, complex, strain-accurate flavour of the source plant — the actual grape of a Granddaddy Purple, the actual diesel and pine of a Sour Diesel, the actual sweet vanilla of a Wedding Cake.
This is entirely due to terpene preservation. Terpenes are the aromatic compounds responsible for every scent and flavour note in cannabis, and live resin retains far more of them than any concentrate made from dried plant material. The difference in terpene content between a live resin and a standard shatter from the same strain can be dramatic — sometimes two to three times higher.
For users who genuinely enjoy the flavour dimension of cannabis — who can tell the difference between strains by smell and taste and consider that experience meaningful — live resin is not a luxury. It is the only concentrate format that fully delivers what they’re actually looking for.
Reason 2: The Effects Are More Nuanced and Strain-Specific
Terpenes don’t just shape flavour — they contribute meaningfully to the effects of a cannabis product. This is the concept known as the entourage effect: the idea that cannabinoids and terpenes work together more effectively than any single isolated compound, and that the specific combination of compounds in a given strain shapes the character of its effects.
When terpenes are lost during drying and processing, so is much of the strain-specific character of the effects. A shatter made from a Bubba Kush and a shatter made from a Blue Dream might both deliver a high-THC experience, but the subtle differences in effect character — the specific quality of the relaxation, the mental dimension, the duration — that distinguish those strains in flower form are significantly diminished in the final concentrate.
Live resin, with its preserved terpene profile, delivers a noticeably more strain-specific experience. If you’re choosing a live resin specifically because you want the sedating, myrcene-forward body relaxation of an indica strain, you’re much more likely to get exactly that from a live resin than from a shatter made from the same genetics after a full dry and cure.
For medical cannabis users who rely on specific strains for specific outcomes — a particular indica for sleep, a sativa-leaning product for daytime function — this strain accuracy has real practical value.
Reason 3: The Terpene Content Supports a More Complete Experience
Building on the entourage effect, there is specific evidence that several of the terpenes most concentrated in live resin have their own direct therapeutic properties beyond simply modulating the effects of THC.
Myrcene — one of the most abundant terpenes in many indica-dominant live resins — is associated with sedation, muscle relaxation, and anti-inflammatory properties. Cannabis products with high myrcene content consistently rate higher for physical relaxation and sleep support.
Caryophyllene — a spicy, peppery terpene common in many OG and Kush-lineage live resins — is the only terpene known to directly interact with the body’s CB2 receptors, contributing anti-inflammatory and stress-relieving properties beyond what THC alone delivers.
Limonene — a citrusy terpene found in high concentrations in many sativa-leaning live resins — is associated with mood elevation, reduced anxiety, and increased energy. Its presence in a sativa live resin contributes meaningfully to the uplifting, functional character of the experience.
Linalool — the floral terpene also found in lavender — is associated with calm, anxiety reduction, and sedation. Its presence in an indica live resin deepens the relaxing character of the experience.
When you buy a shatter or distillate, most of these terpenes have been significantly reduced or eliminated. When you buy a live resin, you’re getting all of them in something close to their natural proportions. For users who care about the full therapeutic dimension of cannabis — not just the THC percentage — this is a significant practical difference.
Reason 4: It’s More Economical Than It Appears
This is the reason that surprises most first-time live resin buyers, and it’s worth doing the maths before dismissing live resin on price alone.
Live resin consistently costs more per gram than shatter, crumble, or standard BHO extracts. That much is straightforward. But concentrate users quickly discover that the higher terpene content of live resin means you need significantly less of it to achieve the same experience as a larger quantity of a less potent, less flavourful concentrate.
The reason is the entourage effect in action. A small, low-temperature dab of a terpene-rich live resin delivers a more complete, satisfying, and often longer-lasting experience than a larger dab of a stripped-out distillate at the same THC percentage. Experienced concentrate users consistently report using less live resin per session than they would of other concentrate types to achieve their desired effect.
When you factor in the reduced quantity needed per session, the effective cost-per-experience of quality live resin narrows considerably compared to its lower-priced alternatives. It doesn’t always close the gap entirely — live resin is genuinely more expensive to produce — but the difference is meaningfully smaller in practice than the per-gram price comparison suggests.
Reason 5: It Represents the Highest Expression of the Source Strain
For cannabis enthusiasts who care about the quality and character of what they consume, live resin occupies a unique position in the product landscape. It is the only concentrate format that genuinely captures what a specific strain is — its complete aromatic fingerprint, its full cannabinoid and terpene profile, the living character of the plant at its peak.
Every other concentrate type involves a trade-off. Shatter sacrifices terpenes for stability and a clean, consistent texture. Distillate sacrifices almost everything except THC for maximum potency and neutrality. Even well-produced crumble and wax lose meaningful terpene content during the drying and processing of the source material.
Live resin makes no such compromise. The goal of the extraction is to capture the plant as completely as possible — and when it’s done well, with quality genetics and careful low-temperature processing, the result is a product that tells you something real and specific about the strain it came from. That authenticity — the ability to taste the difference between a Gelato and a Do-Si-Dos not just in flower but in concentrate form — is something that no other extraction method delivers as effectively.
For cannabis users who have moved beyond simply getting high and are genuinely interested in the diversity of what the cannabis plant can express, live resin is the most honest representation available in concentrate form.
Live Resin vs Other Concentrates — A Quick Comparison
Live Resin vs Shatter: Live resin has a significantly richer terpene profile, better flavour, and more nuanced strain-specific effects. Shatter is more stable, easier to handle at room temperature, and less expensive. For flavour and effect quality, live resin wins. For budget-conscious concentrate buyers, shatter is a solid alternative. Browse our shatter selection.
Live Resin vs Distillate: Distillate is the most refined and highest-THC concentrate available, but it sacrifices virtually all terpenes in the process. Live resin retains the full terpene profile of the source plant. For potency alone, distillate competes. For a complete, flavourful, strain-specific experience, live resin is superior. Browse our distillate products.
Live Resin vs Hash Rosin: Hash rosin is the premium solventless alternative to live resin — produced without any chemical solvents using only heat and pressure. Both deliver exceptional terpene preservation and a high-quality experience. Hash rosin commands an even higher price point due to its solventless production process and is generally considered the pinnacle of the concentrates market. Browse our hash rosin selection.
Live Resin vs Crumble: Crumble retains more terpenes than shatter but significantly fewer than live resin. It’s a middle-ground option — better flavour than shatter or distillate at a lower price than live resin. Browse our crumble products.
How to Consume Live Resin
Live resin is most commonly consumed by dabbing — a small amount placed on a heated nail or banger attached to a dab rig and inhaled as vapour. The flavour experience of live resin is best appreciated at lower dabbing temperatures, which preserve more of the terpene content in the vapour and produce a smoother, more flavourful draw than higher-temperature dabs.
Live resin is also available in vape cartridge format — live resin cartridges are among the most popular products in our vapes and cartridges section — making it accessible to users who want the flavour and terpene benefits of live resin without investing in a full dabbing setup.
For users new to concentrates entirely, a live resin vape cartridge is the most approachable entry point — familiar format, no equipment required beyond a 510-thread battery, and immediate access to the flavour difference that makes live resin worth discussing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is live resin and why is it more expensive? Live resin is a cannabis concentrate made from freshly frozen plants, preserving the full terpene profile of the living plant. It costs more because the production process is more complex, the yields are lower, and the quality of the final product — in terms of flavour, aroma, and strain-specific effects — is significantly higher than standard concentrates.
Is live resin stronger than shatter? Not necessarily in terms of THC percentage — shatter and live resin can have comparable THC content. However, live resin’s preserved terpene profile produces a more complete, nuanced effect through the entourage effect, which many users experience as a richer and more satisfying session.
How do you consume live resin? The most common methods are dabbing using a dab rig and vaping using a live resin vape cartridge. Live resin cartridges are the most accessible option for users who don’t have a dabbing setup.
