If you’ve made it to the point of asking about dab rigs, you’re probably already familiar with cannabis concentrates and ready to take your consumption experience to the next level. Dabbing is widely regarded as the most flavourful, efficient, and satisfying way to consume high-quality concentrates — but walking into the dab rig market without any context can feel genuinely overwhelming. Glass rigs, e-rigs, bangers, nails, carb caps, torches — the terminology multiplies quickly.
This guide cuts through the noise. Here’s what a dab rig actually is, the different types available, what to look for when choosing one, and how to pair your rig with the best concentrates available from The Purple Leaf.
What Is a Dab Rig?
A dab rig is a specialised water pipe designed specifically for vaporising cannabis concentrates. It works similarly to a bong in that smoke or vapour passes through water before being inhaled — but where a bong is designed to combust flower, a dab rig is designed to vaporise concentrates on a heated surface called a nail or banger.
The basic setup consists of a glass water pipe body, a nail or banger made from quartz, titanium, or ceramic, a torch to heat the nail, and a carb cap to regulate airflow during the dab. Electronic rigs — called e-rigs or electric dab rigs — replace the torch with a battery-powered heating element, eliminating the need for an open flame entirely.
The water filtration cools and smooths the vapour before inhalation, producing a cleaner, more pleasant experience than consuming concentrate without any filtration. The combination of water cooling and the vapour — rather than smoke — produced by concentrate consumption makes dabbing one of the most flavour-forward and respiratory-friendly ways to consume cannabis.

Types of Dab Rigs — What’s Available
Traditional Glass Dab Rigs
The classic dab rig is a hand-blown glass water pipe with a male or female joint that accepts a separate quartz banger. Traditional glass rigs range from simple, affordable mini rigs designed for portability and ease of use, to elaborate, artisan-crafted pieces with complex percolation systems that deliver exceptional vapour cooling and filtration.
Mini rigs (under 6 inches) have become increasingly popular among concentrate enthusiasts for good reason. Their small chamber size means less vapour volume — the concentrate vapour travels a shorter distance to the mouthpiece and arrives more concentrated in flavour and potency. Counter-intuitively, many experienced dabbers prefer smaller rigs specifically because they deliver a more flavour-forward experience than larger pieces.
Standard rigs (6–12 inches) offer a balance of flavour preservation and vapour cooling. The slightly larger chamber provides more filtration than a mini rig while still delivering a clean, concentrated vapour experience.
Recycler rigs use a two-chamber design that continuously cycles water through the piece during inhalation. This produces exceptional vapour cooling and a smooth, clean draw — popular among users who prioritise comfort and smoothness over maximum flavour concentration.
Quartz Bangers
The banger is the heating element where the concentrate is placed and vapourised — and the quality of your banger matters as much as the quality of your rig. Quartz is the material of choice for serious concentrate users because it heats evenly, retains heat well, is non-reactive with concentrate compounds, and delivers the cleanest flavour of any banger material available.
The thickness of the quartz matters — thicker bangers (4mm+) retain heat longer and are more forgiving of temperature variation, while thinner bangers heat and cool faster for users who prefer precise, low-temperature dabbing.
Electronic Dab Rigs (E-Rigs)
E-rigs are battery-powered devices that combine the rig and the heating element into a single self-contained unit, eliminating the need for a butane torch entirely. The heating element reaches a set temperature on a defined timer and maintains it precisely throughout the dab — removing the guesswork from temperature management that is one of the more challenging aspects of traditional torch-and-banger dabbing.
Popular e-rigs feature precise temperature control, often through a companion smartphone app, and some models incorporate water filtration for vapour cooling similar to a traditional rig. They are significantly more expensive than traditional glass setups but offer a level of consistency and convenience that many users find worth the premium — particularly those who dab regularly and find torch management inconvenient.
For users who want the benefits of precise temperature control without the full e-rig investment, a standard glass rig paired with a quality quartz banger and an infrared thermometer for temperature monitoring is a cost-effective alternative.
Dab Pens and Portable Rigs
For users who want to consume concentrates on the go without carrying a full glass setup, dab pens and portable e-rigs offer a compact, discreet alternative. Dab pens use a coil or ceramic heating element to vapourise small amounts of concentrate directly in a pen-sized device — convenient and portable but lacking the water filtration and flavour quality of a proper rig.
Portable e-rigs are a step up — compact, battery-powered devices with small water chambers that deliver a significantly better experience than a dab pen while remaining travel-friendly.
What to Look for in a Dab Rig
Glass Quality
Borosilicate glass is the standard material for quality dab rigs — it’s heat-resistant, durable, and non-reactive with concentrate compounds. Avoid thin, low-quality glass that is prone to cracking at the joint or during cleaning. A well-made borosilicate rig will last years with proper care.
Joint Size and Gender
Dab rigs use either 10mm, 14mm, or 18mm joints in male or female configurations. The joint size and gender of the rig must match the banger you use. 14mm female joints are the most common standard in the legal Canadian market — they accept the widest range of compatible bangers and accessories. When in doubt, 14mm female is the safest choice for accessories compatibility.
Percolation
The percolator is the water filtration component inside the rig that diffuses vapour through water to cool and filter it. Simple diffusion percolators work well for concentrate use — more complex multi-chamber percolation systems can actually strip terpenes from the vapour if the filtration is excessive. For concentrates specifically, moderate percolation that cools without over-filtering produces the best flavour experience.
Size
As noted above, smaller rigs often deliver more flavour-forward concentrate experiences than larger pieces. A mini rig or compact standard rig is generally the better choice for concentrate use — save the large elaborate water pipe for dry herb if you use both formats.
Accessories
A complete dab setup requires more than just the rig. At minimum you’ll need a quality quartz banger, a carb cap to regulate airflow and trap vapour during low-temperature dabs, a dab tool for portioning and placing concentrate on the banger, and a cleaning solution to maintain the rig. Temperature — The Most Important Variable in Dabbing
Getting the temperature right is the single biggest factor separating a great dab from a mediocre one — and it’s the variable that takes the most practice to master with a traditional torch setup.
Low-temperature dabs (315–450°F / 157–232°C) preserve the maximum terpene content of your concentrate, delivering the richest flavour and the most nuanced, strain-specific effect. The vapour is smoother and more pleasant to inhale. The trade-off is slightly less visible vapour and a smaller immediate hit. Low-temperature dabbing is the preferred method for flavour-focused users consuming premium products like live resin and hash rosin.
Medium-temperature dabs (450–600°F / 232–315°C) balance flavour and vapour production. This is the range most experienced dabbers settle in for everyday consumption — enough heat to fully vapourise the concentrate and produce satisfying visible vapour, while preserving enough terpene content for a flavourful experience.
High-temperature dabs (above 600°F / 315°C) produce large, dense vapour clouds and maximum THC delivery but significantly degrade terpene content. The vapour is harsher and less flavourful. High-temperature dabbing is associated with more throat irritation and a less pleasant overall experience — experienced concentrate users generally avoid it.
With a traditional torch setup, the most reliable method for hitting a consistent temperature is the heat-and-wait approach: heat the banger until it glows slightly, then wait a defined number of seconds — typically 30–60 seconds depending on banger thickness — before placing your concentrate. An infrared thermometer eliminates the guesswork and is one of the most useful accessories a traditional rig user can add to their setup.
Choosing the Right Concentrate for Your Rig
The quality of your rig matters — but the quality of your concentrate matters equally. A premium e-rig loaded with low-quality distillate will never deliver the flavour experience that a modest glass rig loaded with quality live resin can.
For the best dabbing experience, pair your rig with concentrates that prioritise terpene preservation.
Live resin is the most popular choice for flavour-focused dabbing — extracted from freshly frozen plants to preserve the full terpene profile of the source strain. The difference in flavour between a live resin dab and a standard shatter dab is immediately and dramatically apparent.
Hash rosin is the premium solventless option — the cleanest, most full-spectrum concentrate available in the legal market. For users who want the absolute best flavour experience from their rig, hash rosin is the answer.
Shatter is an excellent everyday concentrate for regular dabbers — stable, easy to handle, and consistently potent. Not as terpene-rich as live resin or rosin but a reliable, cost-effective option for high-volume users.
Crumble is easy to portion and handle on a dab tool — the dry, non-sticky texture makes it one of the most practical concentrate formats for regular dabbing. Good flavour at a moderate price point.
Distillate is the highest-THC option but sacrifices most terpene content in the refinement process. Better suited to vape cartridges than a flavour-focused dab rig experience.

Dab Rig Maintenance — Keeping Your Setup Clean
A clean rig delivers dramatically better flavour than a dirty one. Concentrate residue builds up quickly in the banger and the body of the rig, and this residue degrades the flavour of subsequent dabs significantly if not cleaned regularly.
After each session: Wipe the inside of the warm banger with a cotton swab to remove any residual concentrate before it hardens. This single habit extends the life of your banger significantly and keeps each dab as clean as the last.
Weekly: Clean the banger thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol, rinsing with warm water after. Change the water in the rig body after every few sessions — stale water produces off-flavours that negatively affect the concentrate experience.
Monthly: A full isopropyl alcohol soak of the rig body removes accumulated residue from the glass. Browse our cleaner products at The Purple Leaf for solutions designed specifically for glass cannabis equipment.
Frequently Asked Questions
