The word “kush” shows up everywhere — in strain names, in song lyrics, in casual conversation between cannabis enthusiasts. But what does it actually mean, and why does it carry so much weight in the cannabis world? Here’s everything you need to know.
What Is Kush?
Kush is widely known as the King of Cannabis, and the title comes with a real history behind it.
“Kush” refers to a specific variety of cannabis that originates from the Hindu Kush mountain range — a roughly 800-kilometre stretch of mountains spanning parts of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northwestern India. This region is one of the only places on earth where cannabis grows naturally in the wild, making it the ancestral home of the plant as we know it today.
Strains that developed naturally in this environment — often called landrace strains — are considered true kush strains. These plants evolved over thousands of years in a harsh, high-altitude climate, producing characteristics that set them apart from cannabis grown or bred elsewhere.
You’ll sometimes hear “kush” used loosely as slang for high-quality flower of any background. While that’s a common usage, only strains with authentic genetics tracing back to this region carry the title in its proper sense. What Makes Kush Strains Unique?
There are several traits that distinguish kush strains from other cannabis varieties, and most of them are noticeable through your senses.
Taste: Kush strains tend to deliver smooth, herbal flavours on the exhale. Depending on the specific strain, you might pick up hints of grape or floral notes alongside the signature gassy undertone that kush is known for.
Smell: The aroma is bold and distinctive — expect musky, earthy, and often fuel-like fragrances. Whether you’re smelling fresh flower or mid-session, the scent of a quality kush strain is hard to mistake.
Appearance: Kush plants typically display deep emerald greens with generous flashes of purple throughout the leaves and buds. Fiery orange and bronze pistils wrap around the flowers, giving kush nugs a colourful, layered look that’s striking even before it’s been broken down.
Effects: Kush strains lean heavily on the indica side of the spectrum. They’re widely associated with deep relaxation, a pleasant lift in mood, and what many describe as meditative or body-focused effects. If you’re looking for something to help you wind down, kush is a reliable place to start.
That said, no two strains are exactly alike. Cannabis plants are as complex and variable as any other plant, and genetics play a big role in how any given kush strain will look, smell, and feel.
Popular Kush Strains to Try
If you’re curious about exploring this lineage, a few strains stand out as great starting points.
OG Kush is arguably one of the most well-known cannabis strains ever produced. Created in the early 1990s from a cross of Chemdawg, Lemon Thai, and Hindu Kush genetics, its exact origins carry a bit of mystery — which only adds to the legend. Its effects have made it a benchmark strain for decades. Strains like Pink Kush, Girl Scout Cookies, and Wedding Cake all carry some OG Kush genetics in their lineage.
Hindu Kush is about as close to the source as you can get. Named directly after the mountain range it comes from, this is a true landrace strain — unchanged by crossbreeding and as close to the original plant as modern cannabis culture has to offer. It’s a must-try for anyone wanting an authentic kush experience.
Bubba Kush takes original kush genetics and crosses them with Northern Lights, one of the most celebrated strains in cannabis history. The result is a rich, potent flower with a flavour profile all its own. The Purple Leaf carries a rotating selection of flower, so it’s worth checking in regularly to see what’s available.
Why Kush Has Earned Its Reputation
Kush strains have been around longer than most modern cannabis varieties, and their reputation has held up across generations of growers and consumers. The combination of ancient landrace genetics, distinct sensory qualities, and reliable effects has made kush a cornerstone of cannabis culture — not just a trend, but a standard.
Whether you’re new to cannabis flower or a longtime enthusiast, trying a kush strain is worth the experience. Visit The Purple Leaf to browse what’s in stock and find the right kush strain for your next session.
