Finding a genuinely good deal on cannabis in Canada takes more than a quick Google search. The legal market has matured considerably since 2018 — prices have dropped, competition has increased, and the value available from the best licensed retailers is now genuinely competitive with anything the grey market used to offer. But not all deals are created equal, and knowing where to look and what to look for separates a real bargain from a marketing headline.
This guide covers everything you need to know about finding the cheapest ounce deals on cannabis in Canada — what budget ounces actually are, where to find the best pricing, and how to make sure you’re getting genuine value rather than simply low-quality product at a low price.
What Is a Budget Ounce?
A budget ounce is a full 28 grams of cannabis flower sold at a discounted per-gram price compared to standard menu pricing. They are typically made available in AA quality grade — flower that is fully functional and appropriate for everyday recreational use but may be less visually refined, less aromatic, or less precisely trimmed than premium AAA or AAAA craft grades.
The per-gram economics of a budget ounce versus individual gram purchases are significant. At standard menu pricing, individual grams of mid-range cannabis in Ontario typically cost $8–$15 per gram. A budget ounce reduces this to $3–$6 per gram or less — a saving of 50–70% per gram for buying in volume.
For regular cannabis consumers who aren’t fixated on premium craft flower for every session — users who vape concentrates or use a vaporizer for whom visual bud quality is irrelevant, users who primarily roll joints, or users who simply want the most cannabis for their money — budget ounces represent the most cost-effective legal cannabis purchasing available in Canada.
The Purple Leaf Budget Ounce Program — The Best Deal in Ontario
The Purple Leaf runs one of the most consistently competitive budget ounce programs available from any licensed retailer in Ontario. Our budget ounce deals start at $20 and scale through several tiers up to $80 for a full ounce — delivering per-gram pricing that competes directly with the grey market while offering all the safety, testing, and legal protection of a licensed retailer.
Here’s what makes our budget ounce program stand apart from the competition.
Genuinely competitive pricing. A $20 starting point for a quantity of legal, tested cannabis flower is among the most accessible pricing available from any licensed Canadian retailer. The higher tiers offer progressively larger quantities at proportionally better per-gram rates.
Tested and accurately labelled product. Every budget ounce product at The Purple Leaf meets Health Canada’s mandatory testing requirements. THC and CBD percentages are verified and accurately displayed — you know exactly what you’re getting in terms of potency before you buy.
Regularly updated inventory. We rotate our budget ounce selection regularly to keep the menu fresh. Checking back frequently — or subscribing to our newsletter for early access to new arrivals — is the most reliable way to catch the best available deals before they sell through.
Stacks with promotions. Budget ounce pricing already represents our most competitive flower value. New customers who subscribe to our newsletter can use code PRIMETIME for 10% off their first order — including on budget ounce purchases.

How to Find the Best Ounce Deals in Canada — A Practical Guide
Shop Online Rather Than In-Store
Online cannabis retailers consistently offer better pricing than brick-and-mortar dispensaries for a straightforward structural reason — lower overhead. A physical dispensary carries rent, staff, utilities, and fit-out costs that all eventually appear in the product pricing. An online retailer operating with lower fixed costs can price more aggressively and pass the savings to the customer.
The Purple Leaf operates primarily online — our lower overhead structure is one of the primary reasons our budget ounce program starts at $20 when comparable product at a physical dispensary in Ontario might cost significantly more.
Subscribe to Retailer Newsletters
The best cannabis deals in the Canadian legal market are frequently time-limited and announced to newsletter subscribers before being listed publicly. Retailers use promotional pricing to move specific inventory quickly — the buyers who are subscribed and paying attention capture these deals; the buyers who aren’t miss them.

Buy in Larger Quantities When You Find a Good Deal
Budget ounce pricing is already the most economical way to buy cannabis flower in the legal Canadian market. When a particularly strong deal appears — a new budget ounce tier at an unusually competitive price, a promotional discount on top of already-reduced pricing — buying a larger quantity than your immediate need and storing it properly extends the value of that deal across several weeks of consumption.
Properly stored cannabis flower remains in excellent condition for 3–6 months in an airtight glass jar at 55–65% relative humidity, away from heat and light. Stock up intelligently when the pricing is right and you effectively lock in that per-gram cost across your entire supply at that price.
Understand Quality Tiers Before You Buy
Not all budget ounces deliver equal value — and understanding quality tiers before you purchase helps you make a better decision.
AA grade is the standard tier for budget ounce programs. Flower that may have smaller bud sizes, less precise trimming, or slightly reduced visual appeal compared to premium grades — but is fully potent, properly cured, and entirely appropriate for everyday use. For users who grind flower for joints, mix into a vaporizer, or use for cooking, visual bud quality is largely irrelevant and AA flower at budget ounce pricing represents exceptional value.
AAA grade is mid-range — better visual quality, more consistent bud size, more precise trimming, and typically stronger flavour expression than AA. Budget ounces occasionally appear at this tier during promotional periods, representing excellent value.
AAAA craft is the premium tier — the best-grown, most visually impressive, most aromatic flower on the menu. Budget ounce pricing rarely reaches this tier. Browse our full flower menu for our complete craft selection.
Check Weedmaps and Cannabis Deal Communities
Beyond individual retailer websites, several online resources aggregate current cannabis deals from licensed retailers across Canada. Weedmaps Canada lists licensed retailers with their current promotions and menu pricing, making it a useful comparison tool for buyers shopping across multiple retailers.
Reddit communities focused on Canadian cannabis — r/canadients in particular — are active with real user reports of current deals and quality assessments of specific budget ounce products from retailers across the country. User reviews are a valuable supplement to retailer marketing in assessing whether a specific budget ounce product actually delivers at its price point.
Is Budget Ounce Cannabis Worth Buying?
This is the honest question at the centre of the budget ounce conversation — and the answer is a clear yes, with appropriate context.
For rolling joints: Budget AA flower ground and rolled into a joint produces a perfectly functional smoking experience. The visual quality of the bud before grinding is irrelevant to the final session — once it’s ground, the difference between AA and AAAA flower is primarily in potency and terpene expression, not in how it smokes from a rolling paper. For regular joint rollers buying by the ounce, budget product from a licensed retailer is one of the most sensible purchasing decisions available.
For a vaporizer: Dry herb vaporizer users often find that budget flower vaporizes comparably to mid-range product — the lower-temperature extraction of a vaporizer is actually somewhat forgiving of the slightly reduced terpene content of budget grades compared to high-temperature combustion. Many experienced vaporizer users actively prefer budget ounces as their everyday supply.
For concentrates or cooking: If you’re making your own cannabis-infused oil, butter, or concentrates at home, the visual quality and precise trimming of premium flower is entirely irrelevant — what matters is cannabinoid content and the absence of contamination, both of which budget ounce product from a licensed retailer delivers.
For savouring a premium strain experience: If the quality of the bud — the visual appeal, the full aromatic complexity, the dense well-trimmed structure of top-shelf craft flower — is a meaningful part of the experience you’re seeking, budget ounce product is not the right choice. Beyond Budget Ounces — Other Ways to Save on Cannabis in Canada
Concentrates — Better Value Per THC Milligram Than Flower
For experienced cannabis users who have built significant tolerance, cannabis concentrates often represent better value per milligram of THC than even the cheapest budget ounce — despite the higher per-gram price.
A gram of quality shatter at 80% THC contains 800 mg of THC. A gram of budget AA flower at 15% THC contains 150 mg. The concentrate delivers more than five times the THC per gram — and requires a fraction of the quantity per session to achieve the same effect. For regular consumers whose tolerance has developed to the point where they need significant quantities of flower per session, the mathematics of concentrates frequently produce lower monthly spend.

Edibles — Lower Per-Session Cost for Occasional Users
For occasional cannabis consumers who use cannabis primarily for sleep or relaxation a few times per week, a pack of low-dose cannabis edibles at 5–10 mg THC per serving often represents lower monthly spend than maintaining a flower supply — particularly when the extended 4–8 hour duration of edibles means fewer total sessions are needed to achieve the same cumulative effect.

Weekly Sales and Rotating Promotions
The Purple Leaf runs weekly promotions across all product categories — flower, concentrates, edibles, and vapes. Timing your purchases around these promotions — available to newsletter subscribers in advance of public listing — is the most reliable way to consistently pay less than standard menu pricing across your entire cannabis spend.
