Rolling papers, blunts, and pre-rolls are three of the most widely used cannabis consumption formats in Canada — and choosing between them is one of the first practical decisions most cannabis users make. Each has a distinct character, a different set of advantages, and a specific user profile it’s best suited to.
This guide covers the honest pros and cons of each format — so you can make an informed choice based on what actually matters to you rather than habit or assumption.
Rolling Papers
Rolling papers are thin, lightweight sheets of paper used to hand-roll cannabis flower into a joint. They are the most traditional and widely used cannabis consumption format globally and the default starting point for most cannabis users who prefer smoking to vaping or edibles.
What They’re Made From
Legal cannabis rolling papers in Canada are available in several materials, each with distinct burn and flavour characteristics.
Rice paper is the most widely preferred material among cannabis enthusiasts who pay attention to the sensory experience of their sessions. Rice paper is extremely thin, burns very slowly and evenly, and produces minimal flavour interference with the terpene profile of the cannabis inside. The thin material requires slightly more rolling skill than heavier papers but rewards the effort with the cleanest flavour experience in the rolling paper category.
Hemp paper is made from hemp plant fibres and has become increasingly popular in the legal Canadian market. It burns slightly faster than rice paper but remains largely flavour-neutral, biodegrades more quickly than wood pulp papers, and is considered the most environmentally appropriate rolling paper option. Hemp paper is slightly more forgiving to roll with than rice paper due to its slightly heavier texture.
Wood pulp paper is the traditional standard — the material used in most conventional cigarette papers. It burns faster than rice or hemp alternatives and can contribute a faintly papery taste to the smoke. Most experienced cannabis users prefer rice or hemp alternatives for this reason, but wood pulp papers are widely available and entirely functional.
Flavoured papers are available across all base materials and add a flavoured dimension — fruit, candy, dessert flavours — to the smoking experience. Popular for casual or social sessions, though the added flavouring inevitably masks some of the cannabis terpene expression.
Rolling Sizes
Papers come in several standard sizes. Single wide (standard) papers are the smallest format — suitable for solo sessions with modest amounts of flower. 1¼ size is the most popular everyday format — slightly wider than single wide, accommodating a comfortable amount of flower for a single to two-person session. King size is the largest standard format, producing a longer joint suitable for extended sessions or larger groups.
Pros of Rolling Papers
Maximum control over the experience. When you roll your own joint from loose flower, you control every variable — the strain, the amount of flower, the tightness of the roll, the paper type, the size. This level of customisation is not available in any pre-packaged format.
The lowest cost per session. Buying flower in bulk — particularly through our budget ounce program starting at $20 — and rolling your own joints is the most cost-effective way to consume cannabis flower in the legal Canadian market. Papers and filters add minimal cost per session.
Strain variety. Rolling your own allows you to choose any strain from our full flower menu — indica, sativa, or hybrid — and to mix strains within a single session if you choose.
The purest flavour experience. Quality rice paper with quality cannabis flower produces the cleanest, most terpene-forward smoking experience available in the rolled format — nothing interferes with the natural character of the strain.
Cons of Rolling Papers
Requires skill and practice. Rolling a well-packed, evenly burning joint consistently takes genuine practice. New users typically produce loose, unevenly burning joints before developing the technique for consistent results.
Requires equipment. A grinder, papers, and filter tips are the minimum setup — a rolling tray adds convenience. Browse our papers and trays section and grinders at The Purple Leaf for available options.
Time investment. Rolling a joint adds several minutes of preparation to every session — not significant in isolation, but meaningful over time for frequent consumers.
Inconsistency. Even experienced rollers produce variable results depending on conditions, flower grind, and attention to the roll. A poorly rolled joint can burn unevenly, canoe badly, or draw too tightly to be enjoyable.
Blunts
A blunt is cannabis flower rolled in tobacco leaf wrap — either a cigar or cigarillo that has been emptied of its tobacco filling, or a pre-made blunt wrap purchased specifically for the purpose. The tobacco leaf wrapper adds nicotine, a distinctive flavour, and a slower, denser burn compared to a standard rolling paper joint.
Blunts have deep roots in hip-hop and cannabis culture and remain popular particularly in North American urban communities — but they are a distinctly different consumption experience from a standard joint and come with trade-offs worth understanding before choosing them.
Pros of Blunts
Slow, long burn. The tobacco leaf wrapper burns significantly more slowly than rolling paper — a well-rolled blunt lasts considerably longer than an equivalent paper joint. For extended sessions or group settings where the joint is passed around repeatedly, this burn rate is a genuine advantage.
Holds more cannabis. The larger format of a blunt wrap accommodates more cannabis than a standard rolling paper, making blunts popular for group consumption.
Distinctive flavour and experience. Blunts have a characteristic flavour from the tobacco wrap — sweet, earthy, and distinctly different from a paper joint — that a specific subset of cannabis users actively prefers.
Social format. The larger size, slower burn, and cultural associations of the blunt make it a format particularly associated with social cannabis consumption. Passing a blunt in a group setting has a specific social character that differs from passing a joint.
Cons of Blunts
Tobacco and nicotine content. This is the most significant drawback and one that deserves clear emphasis. Tobacco leaf wraps contain nicotine — a highly addictive compound with well-documented health consequences. Regular blunt consumption exposes the user to nicotine alongside cannabis, with associated addiction risk and cardiovascular effects. Users who are nicotine-sensitive, who have never smoked tobacco, or who are managing health conditions should approach blunts with clear awareness of this component.
Masks cannabis flavour significantly. The strong flavour of tobacco leaf wrap substantially obscures the terpene profile of the cannabis inside. Users who choose their cannabis based on strain-specific flavour and aroma will find that blunts are counterproductive to appreciating these qualities.
Health considerations beyond nicotine. Tobacco combustion adds the same harmful byproducts to the smoke as any tobacco product — carbon monoxide, tar, and additional carcinogens — on top of the byproducts of cannabis combustion.
Not suited to lower-tolerance users. The combination of cannabis and nicotine can be overwhelming for users who are new to either substance or who have lower tolerance to stimulants.
Pre-Rolls
Pre-rolled joints are cannabis cigarettes that have been rolled and packaged by the producer or retailer, ready to smoke straight from the package. They are one of the most popular product categories in the legal Canadian cannabis market — and the most convenient smoking format available.

Types of Pre-Rolls
Standard pre-rolls contain ground cannabis flower in rolling paper with a filter tip. Available across all strain categories in sizes from 0.5g to 1g and larger. The most straightforward and widely available pre-roll format.
Infused pre-rolls are coated or filled with cannabis concentrate — oil, wax, or live resin — before or after rolling, significantly increasing potency and often flavour complexity.
Moon Rockets are our signature infused pre-roll at The Purple Leaf — cannabis flower coated in cannabis oil and rolled in kief, producing a dense, slow-burning, highly potent pre-roll that represents the premium end of the category.
Pros of Pre-Rolls
Zero preparation required. Open the package, light the filter end, and consume. No grinder, no papers, no rolling technique needed. The most accessible format for new users and the most convenient for experienced users who want to skip the preparation step.
Consistent quality. Machine-produced pre-rolls are packed to a uniform density that burns evenly from end to end — a consistency that even experienced hand-rollers don’t always achieve.
Strain-specific and accurately labelled. Every legal pre-roll in Canada clearly displays the strain, THC and CBD percentages, and net weight. You know exactly what you’re consuming before you light it.
Portable and ready-to-go. A pre-roll in its original sealed packaging is one of the most portable cannabis formats available — compact, protected, and requiring nothing beyond a lighter to consume.
Available in elevated formats. Moon Rockets and infused pre-rolls deliver a significantly more potent and flavour-complex experience than a standard joint — formats that are difficult or impossible to replicate consistently at home.
Cons of Pre-Rolls
Higher cost per gram than rolling your own. The convenience of a pre-roll comes with a modest cost premium over buying the equivalent flower in bulk and rolling your own. For budget-conscious regular consumers, rolling from our budget ounce deals remains the most economical option.
Less control over the contents. You’re consuming what’s in the pre-roll as packaged — you can’t adjust the strain, the amount, or mix different flower types the way you can when rolling your own.
Freshness can vary. Ground flower in a pre-roll loses terpenes faster than whole buds stored in a sealed jar. Pre-rolls from retailers with good inventory rotation are comparable in quality to freshly ground flower — but older stock can taste noticeably staler than fresh product.
Head-to-Head Comparison
Flavour
Rolling papers win for pure flavour. Quality rice paper with fresh cannabis flower produces the cleanest, most terpene-forward smoking experience of the three formats. Pre-rolls from fresh stock are comparable. Blunts significantly mask cannabis flavour with tobacco character.
Convenience
Pre-rolls win decisively. No preparation, no equipment, no skill required. Rolling papers require technique and equipment. Blunts require emptying a cigar or sourcing wrap material and rolling skill.
Cost
Rolling papers win on cost efficiency. Buying flower in bulk and rolling your own is the cheapest per-gram consumption method. Pre-rolls add a small convenience premium. Blunts add the cost of the wrap product.
Health Considerations
Rolling papers and pre-rolls are equivalent — both involve combustion of cannabis with no tobacco. Blunts add tobacco, nicotine, and additional combustion byproducts to every session.
Social Use
Blunts and pre-rolls are roughly equal for social consumption — both are ready to pass around without preparation. A well-rolled joint is equally social but requires upfront effort. Pre-rolls are the most practical social format for anyone who can’t or doesn’t want to roll.
Potency Options
Pre-rolls win — infused formats like Moon Rockets deliver potency levels that rolling papers and standard blunts cannot match without significant concentrate additions.
Best for Beginners
Pre-rolls win clearly — no skill, no equipment, accurate labelling, and available in low-THC options suited to new users.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between rolling papers, blunts, and pre-rolls? Rolling papers are thin sheets used to hand-roll cannabis joints. Blunts use tobacco leaf wraps and add nicotine and a distinctive flavour alongside cannabis. Pre-rolls are factory-rolled joints prepared by the retailer, ready to smoke with no preparation required. Browse our pre-rolls and papers and trays at The Purple Leaf.
Are blunts stronger than joints? Not inherently — the potency of both depends on the cannabis inside rather than the wrap. Blunts typically contain more cannabis than a standard joint due to their larger format, which can make the overall session more intense. The nicotine in the tobacco wrap also contributes a stimulant effect that some users experience as intensifying the cannabis high.
Are pre-rolls made from good quality flower? Quality varies by retailer. The Purple Leaf’s pre-rolls are made from properly grown, cured whole flower — the same quality material available on our flower menu — not shake or trim.
What are the healthiest rolling papers for cannabis? Unbleached rice paper or organic hemp paper are generally considered the healthiest rolling paper options — they produce the fewest combustion byproducts and the least flavour interference with cannabis.
