Quick answer: A pre-roll is a joint that comes already rolled and packed with ground cannabis flower, ready to light. Pre-rolls are sold as singles or multi-packs, and as regular or infused versions such as moon rockets. At The Purple Leaf, pre-rolls start at $18 for a Hempire 5-pack.
Pre-rolled joints are exactly what they sound like — cannabis joints that have already been rolled for you, packaged, and ready to smoke straight out of the box. No grinder, no rolling papers, no filters, no technique required. Open the package, light the filter end, and you’re consuming within thirty seconds of deciding you want to.
They are one of the most consistently popular product categories in the legal Canadian cannabis market — and for good reason. This guide covers exactly what a pre-roll is, how it works, what’s inside one, the different types available, and everything you need to know to choose the right one.
What Is a Pre-Rolled Joint?
A pre-rolled joint is a cannabis cigarette that has been prepared, rolled, and sealed by the producer or retailer before it reaches you. In the legal Canadian market, pre-rolls are made from ground cannabis flower — indica, sativa, or hybrid strains — rolled in standard rolling paper with a filter tip at the mouthpiece end.
Every legal pre-roll in Canada must clearly display the strain name, THC and CBD percentages, net weight of cannabis, and producer information on the packaging. This transparency is one of the most meaningful differences between legal pre-rolls and anything available through the grey market — you know exactly what strain you’re consuming, how potent it is, and how much flower is in each roll before you light it.

How Does a Pre-Rolled Joint Work?
A pre-rolled joint works identically to a hand-rolled joint — because it is one. The only difference is that someone else did the rolling.
The filter tip at one end — sometimes called a crutch — serves two purposes. It provides a stable mouthpiece that doesn’t collapse or get soggy during smoking, and it creates a small gap between your lips and the cannabis material that prevents plant matter from entering your mouth during inhalation.
To consume a pre-roll you light the open end — the end opposite the filter — while drawing gently through the filter end. The cannabis flower inside ignites and produces smoke that travels through the body of the joint and through the filter to your lungs. Effects onset within 2–10 minutes of the first inhalation, peak within 30 minutes, and typically last 1–3 hours depending on your tolerance, the THC content, and how much of the joint you consume.
There is no technique required beyond a standard lighter and a basic understanding of how to draw through a tube. Pre-rolls are one of the most genuinely beginner-friendly cannabis consumption formats available.
What’s Inside a Pre-Rolled Joint?
The Flower
The cannabis flower inside a pre-roll is ground from the same material available as loose flower on the dispensary menu — indica, sativa, or hybrid strains, typically in AA to AAAA quality grades depending on the product tier.
Quality pre-rolls are made from ground whole flower — properly cultivated, cured buds that have been ground to a consistent texture for even packing and burning. The best pre-rolls at The Purple Leaf use the same quality flower available on our flower menu in loose form.
A note on quality: lower-end pre-rolls — found primarily in the grey market but occasionally at budget price points in the legal market — are sometimes made from shake and trim rather than whole flower. Shake is the small leaf fragments and loose cannabis material that falls off buds during handling and processing. It is less potent, harsher to smoke, and less flavourful than properly ground whole flower. When buying pre-rolls, choosing a product from a reputable licensed retailer with transparent product information ensures you’re getting flower rather than shake.
The Rolling Paper
Legal cannabis pre-rolls use standard rolling paper — typically unbleached rice paper or hemp paper — that burns evenly and cleanly without contributing unwanted flavours to the smoke. The paper is sealed with a small adhesive strip that keeps the joint closed during storage and handling.
The Filter Tip
The filter — also called a crutch — is a small cylindrical insert at the mouthpiece end of the joint, typically made from rolled card stock or a pre-formed filter material. It keeps the end of the joint open for drawing, prevents cannabis from entering your mouth, and allows you to smoke the joint closer to completion without burning your fingers.
Types of Pre-Rolled Joints
Standard Pre-Rolls
A standard pre-roll contains ground cannabis flower in a single paper with a filter tip. They typically come in sizes ranging from 0.5 grams to 1 gram, with some multi-pack formats offering several smaller pre-rolls together for value and variety.
Standard pre-rolls are available across all strain categories — indica for relaxation and sleep, sativa for daytime energy and creativity, and hybrid for a balanced experience. Choosing the right strain category for your intended experience is exactly as important in a pre-roll as it is when choosing loose flower.
Infused Pre-Rolls
Infused pre-rolls are a step up from the standard format — cannabis flower that has been coated, injected, or combined with cannabis concentrate to significantly increase the potency and complexity of the experience.
Common infusion methods include coating the outside of the paper in cannabis oil before rolling in kief — the powder-fine trichome material that collects from cannabis flower — or injecting liquid concentrate into the interior of the roll. The result is a joint that burns significantly more slowly than a standard pre-roll and delivers a noticeably more intense experience from the first draw to the last.
Moon Rockets
Moon Rockets are The Purple Leaf’s signature infused pre-roll — a densely packed cannabis joint coated in cannabis concentrate and rolled in kief. They represent the premium end of the pre-roll category and are among the most popular products on our menu for experienced cannabis users.
The combination of quality flower, concentrate coating, and kief exterior produces a slow-burning, intensely flavourful joint that delivers significantly more THC per session than any standard pre-roll. Moon Rockets are not recommended for first-time or low-tolerance users — their cumulative potency from flower, concentrate, and kief combined is genuinely substantial and best reserved for users with a clear understanding of their personal limits.

Multi-Packs
Many pre-roll products are packaged as multi-packs — typically 3, 5, or 10 pre-rolls per package — offering better value per gram than individually packaged options while providing variety across a session or across multiple occasions. Multi-packs are popular with regular flower consumers who want the convenience of pre-rolls without the cost premium of buying single units.
Pre-Rolls vs Rolling Your Own — The Honest Comparison
The most common question about pre-rolls is whether they’re worth buying versus rolling your own joints from loose flower. The answer depends on what you value.
Convenience is where pre-rolls win decisively. No grinder, no papers, no filters, no rolling skill required. Open the package and consume. For new users who haven’t learned to roll, users who consume infrequently, and anyone who wants to smoke without setup, pre-rolls are the obvious format.
Consistency is another area where pre-rolls have a clear advantage. A machine-produced pre-roll is packed to uniform density that burns evenly from end to end. Hand-rolled joints vary in density, draw resistance, and burn quality depending on the skill of the roller and the conditions of the roll. Getting a consistently excellent hand-rolled joint takes genuine practice.
Cost favours rolling your own. Buying loose flower in bulk — particularly through our budget ounce program starting at $20 — and rolling your own joints is cheaper per gram consumed than buying pre-rolls. The pre-roll premium pays for the labour, the paper, the filter, and the packaging — all of which have real cost.
Freshness gives a slight edge to rolling your own. Whole buds stored properly in a glass jar preserve their terpene profile better than pre-ground flower sitting in a pre-roll. Freshly produced pre-rolls from a retailer with good inventory rotation are comparable in quality, but a pre-roll that has been sitting for an extended period will be drier and less flavourful than freshly ground flower rolled the same day.
For most buyers, the convenience of pre-rolls more than justifies the modest price premium — particularly for occasional consumers, new buyers, and anyone who wants to smoke without the faff of preparation.
How to Choose the Right Pre-Roll
Check the Strain and THC Percentage
The two most important numbers on any pre-roll package are the strain classification and the THC percentage. Use these to choose the experience you’re actually after.
Indica pre-rolls for evening relaxation, sleep support, and unwinding. Sativa pre-rolls for daytime energy, creativity, and social settings. Hybrid pre-rolls for a balanced experience at any time of day. And if you’re new to cannabis or cautious about potency, choose a pre-roll with a THC percentage under 15% as your starting point.
Choose Standard or Infused Based on Your Tolerance
Standard pre-rolls are appropriate for most cannabis users and a sensible starting point for anyone new to the format. Infused pre-rolls and Moon Rockets are best reserved for experienced users with established tolerance who want a more intense experience than standard flower delivers.
Consider the Size
Smaller pre-rolls — 0.5 grams — are ideal for solo sessions or new users calibrating their dose. Larger formats — 1 gram or above — suit longer sessions or sharing with friends. Infused formats like Moon Rockets are typically larger and are designed for experienced users who want an extended, high-potency session.
Tips for Getting the Most From a Pre-Roll
Light it evenly. Hold the flame to the tip of the pre-roll and rotate it slowly while applying heat before drawing. An even initial light prevents canoeing — the uneven burning where one side runs ahead of the other — which wastes cannabis and produces an uneven smoking experience.
Draw gently. Pre-rolls burn best with slow, gentle draws. Pulling hard and fast causes the cherry to overheat, burns through the cannabis too quickly, and produces harsher smoke.
Take a break between draws. Unlike vaping or a pipe where you can load and clear a small amount at a time, a lit joint continues burning between draws. Space your inhalations out to avoid wasting cannabis in smoke that drifts into the air between puffs.
Store unused portions properly. If you don’t finish a pre-roll in a single session, extinguish it carefully and store in an airtight container. Partially smoked joints lose terpenes quickly and develop a stale, ashy flavour if left in the open air for any length of time.
Pair with the right accessories. A quality lighter or hemp wick produces a cleaner initial light than a low-quality lighter. Browse our lighters and lighter fluid section at The Purple Leaf for currently available options.
Pre-Rolls and Other Consumption Methods
Pre-rolls are one of several consumption formats available in the legal Canadian market. Here’s how they compare briefly to the other main options.
Pre-rolls vs loose flower: Identical experience, less preparation with pre-rolls at a slight cost premium. Browse our full flower menu if you prefer to grind and roll your own.
Pre-rolls vs vapes: Vaping produces less odour and is more discreet than smoking a joint. Pre-rolls are more traditional and social. Browse our vapes and cartridges for the vaping alternative.
Pre-rolls vs edibles: Pre-rolls produce effects within minutes and last 1–3 hours. Edibles take up to two hours to onset and last 4–8 hours. Pre-rolls are the better choice for immediate, controlled-duration effects. Browse our edibles menu for the long-duration alternative.
Pre-rolls vs concentrates: Pre-rolls are significantly less potent than dab-format concentrates and more appropriate for most users. Browse our concentrates menu for the high-potency alternative.
