If you want cannabis flower to stay fresh for months, humidity is one of the most important factors to control. Too little moisture can leave flower dry, brittle, and lacking aroma, while excessive moisture can create an environment where mold becomes a concern.
So, what humidity keeps cannabis flower fresh long term? For most cannabis flower, a relative humidity level of approximately 58% to 62% RH is a good target for maintaining freshness, texture, aroma, and overall quality.
Key Takeaways
• 58% to 62% RH is a commonly recommended humidity range for long-term cannabis flower storage.
• Keeping humidity too low can cause flower to become excessively dry and brittle.
• Humidity that is too high can increase the risk of mold and microbial growth.
• Store cannabis in an airtight container to help maintain a stable internal environment.
• Keep your storage container in a cool, dark location away from direct sunlight and heat.
• Humidity-control packs can help maintain a consistent relative humidity inside a properly sealed container.
• Proper storage can help cannabis retain its aroma, texture, and overall quality for several months.
Why Humidity Matters When Storing Cannabis
Cannabis flower naturally contains moisture, and that moisture can change depending on the environment where the flower is stored.
When cannabis becomes excessively dry, the buds can become brittle and crumble more easily. The flower may also lose some of its aroma and develop a harsher experience when consumed.
Too much moisture creates a different problem. Cannabis stored in an overly humid environment can have an increased risk of mold and microbial growth, particularly when the flower is kept in a sealed container.
The goal is to maintain a stable environment rather than allowing the flower to repeatedly become very dry and then absorb moisture again.
What Is the Best Humidity for Long-Term Cannabis Storage?
For most cannabis flower, 58% to 62% relative humidity is a practical target for long-term storage.
A humidity level around 60% provides a middle ground between excessive dryness and excessive moisture. Some storage products are specifically designed to maintain environments around 58% or 62% RH.
The exact humidity you choose is less important than maintaining a relatively stable environment and avoiding extreme fluctuations.
What Happens If Cannabis Gets Too Dry?
Cannabis that is exposed to very dry conditions for an extended period can gradually lose moisture.
Over time, excessively dry flower may:
• Become brittle and crumble easily
• Lose some of its aroma
• Have a harsher smoking experience
• Lose desirable texture
• Become more susceptible to trichome damage during handling
While some moisture can potentially be restored to overly dry flower, preventing excessive drying in the first place is generally preferable.
What Happens If Cannabis Is Too Humid?
Higher humidity isn’t necessarily better for cannabis.
When flower is exposed to excessive moisture, particularly in an environment with poor storage conditions, the risk of mold can increase. Relative humidity above approximately 65% is generally a level where additional caution is warranted. (Already dealing with dry flower? Here’s how to revive dry weed without growing mold.)
Potential warning signs include a musty or unusual smell, visible mold growth, or flower that feels unexpectedly damp.
If cannabis appears to have mold contamination, it should not be consumed.
Does Temperature Matter?
Yes. Humidity is only one part of proper cannabis storage.
Heat can accelerate the degradation of cannabinoids and contribute to the loss of volatile terpenes. For long-term storage, a cool and relatively stable environment is preferable.
A commonly recommended storage temperature is approximately 60°F to 70°F (16°C to 21°C).
Avoid storing cannabis somewhere that experiences significant temperature fluctuations, such as a vehicle, garage, or area exposed to direct sunlight.
Keep Cannabis Away From Light
Light is another important consideration when storing cannabis for an extended period.
Exposure to sunlight and UV radiation can contribute to cannabinoid degradation over time. Leaving cannabis in a transparent container on a sunny windowsill, for example, isn’t ideal for preserving its quality.
Instead, keep your storage container somewhere dark, such as a cabinet or drawer.
For long-term storage, the basic formula is:
Cool + dark + airtight + stable humidity
What Container Is Best for Cannabis Flower?
An airtight glass container is a popular option for cannabis flower because it can help limit exposure to outside air and changing environmental humidity.
Choose a container that is appropriately sized for the amount of flower you’re storing. The buds shouldn’t be compressed, but you also don’t necessarily want a huge container with excessive empty space.
An opaque or UV-resistant container can provide additional protection from light.
Should You Use a Humidity Pack?
Humidity-control packs can help maintain a more consistent environment inside a sealed container.
Two-way humidity-control products are designed to either release or absorb moisture as necessary to help maintain a target relative humidity. Products designed around approximately 58% or 62% RH are commonly used for cannabis storage.
However, a humidity pack isn’t a replacement for properly dried and cured cannabis.
If flower contains excessive moisture when it goes into storage, sealing it in a container with a humidity pack does not eliminate the risk of mold.
How Long Can Cannabis Flower Stay Fresh?
There isn’t a single guaranteed shelf life for cannabis because storage conditions, initial quality, curing, packaging, and other factors can all affect how quickly flower changes.
Under appropriate storage conditions, cannabis can retain much of its quality for several months. Properly stored flower may remain in good condition for approximately 6 to 12 months, although aroma, flavor, texture, and potency can gradually change over time.
The better the storage environment, the more effectively you can slow these changes.
Is 58% or 62% Humidity Better for Cannabis?
Both can be suitable.
If you’re trying to preserve cannabis flower over the long term, maintaining approximately 58% to 62% RH is a reasonable goal.
Some people prefer the slightly drier end of the range, while others prefer flower stored closer to 62% RH. The right choice can depend on the particular flower and how it will be used.
The most important thing is avoiding extreme humidity and significant fluctuations.
How to Check Cannabis Storage Humidity
A small digital hygrometer can help you monitor the relative humidity inside your storage container.
Rather than relying entirely on how the flower feels, a hygrometer gives you an objective reading of the environment.
If the humidity consistently falls outside your target range, you can adjust the storage setup accordingly.
Monitoring the environment is particularly useful when you’re storing cannabis for several months rather than consuming it shortly after purchase.
Final Thoughts
So, what humidity keeps cannabis flower fresh long term?
For most cannabis flower, 58% to 62% relative humidity is a practical target. Maintaining this range inside an airtight container, while protecting the flower from excessive heat and light, can help preserve its texture, aroma, and overall quality.
Humidity is only one part of proper cannabis storage. Starting with properly dried and cured flower, using an appropriate container, maintaining a cool and dark environment, and monitoring humidity can all help extend the usable life of your flower.
When it comes to long-term storage, consistency is key. A stable environment is generally much better than repeatedly exposing cannabis to dramatic changes in temperature and humidity.
