If you’ve heard the term “dabbing” and weren’t sure what it actually meant, you’re not alone. It’s one of those corners of cannabis culture that can look intimidating from the outside — specialized tools, unfamiliar terminology, concentrated products with high potency numbers on the label. But the fundamentals are straightforward once someone walks you through them. This guide covers what dabbing is, the concentrate types worth knowing about, the tools you’ll need, and how to take your first dab without overcomplicating it.
What Is Dabbing?
Dabbing is a method of consuming cannabis concentrates by vaporizing them on a heated surface and inhaling the vapour through a water pipe called a dab rig. Think of concentrates as a refined form of cannabis where cannabinoids and terpenes have been extracted and intensified — the desirable compounds from the plant, concentrated into a much smaller volume.
The process itself involves heating a heat-resistant bowl called a banger with a butane torch, letting it cool to the right temperature, then touching a small amount of concentrate to the surface. The heat vaporizes the concentrate instantly, and you inhale through the rig. That’s the whole idea: precise heat, a small amount of product, and an efficient delivery of cannabinoids and terpenes.
Because concentrates are significantly more potent than dried flower, the golden rule applies more here than almost anywhere else in cannabis: start with far less than you think you need, and wait before taking more. The Purple Leaf carries a selection of concentrates for anyone ready to explore the format.
Types of Concentrates: What’s on the Shelf
Cannabis concentrates come in a range of textures and consistencies, and those differences affect how you handle them, how they taste, and how they vaporize. Here’s what you’re likely to encounter.
Shatter is hard and brittle, similar in texture to hardened candy. It breaks cleanly into shards, which makes portioning fairly simple with a dab tool. The main challenge is that it can be fiddly to snap off precisely, especially for smaller amounts.
Wax and crumble are softer and more forgiving to handle. With a consistency somewhere between beeswax and crumbly cheese, these formats are easier to scoop and load onto a dab tool than shatter, which makes them a practical starting point for beginners still getting used to the equipment.
Live resin is made from fresh-frozen cannabis rather than dried and cured flower, which preserves more of the original terpene profile. The result is a rich, true-to-plant aroma that many concentrate enthusiasts specifically seek out. Consistency varies from a gooey sauce to a more sugar-like texture, and it tends to be sticky and fragrant throughout.
Rosin is produced using heat and pressure rather than chemical solvents, which makes it appealing to consumers who prefer a solvent-free extraction process. It has a soft, pliable consistency and a full-bodied flavour that has made it a favourite among concentrate connoisseurs. Live rosin, made from fresh-frozen material, sits at the top of that category.
Distillate is a highly purified concentrate with a thick, syrup-like consistency. It’s typically very high in THC and relatively flavour-neutral unless terpenes have been reintroduced after processing. Potency is the main draw here.
Diamonds and sauce combine crystallized THCA in a terpene-rich liquid. The result is both visually striking and genuinely flavourful — the crystalline structure delivers high potency while the surrounding sauce carries the strain-specific aromatic character that many dabbers find most enjoyable about the format.
When choosing your first concentrate, consider which texture feels most manageable to work with and whether you’re prioritizing potency, flavour, or a clean and simple experience. The team at The Purple Leaf can help you compare what’s currently in stock.
The Tools You Need to Get Started
A basic dabbing setup requires a handful of specific pieces. Here’s what each one does.
Dab rig is the water pipe designed for concentrates. It looks similar to a bong but is built to accept a banger rather than a dry herb bowl. The water in the rig cools and filters the vapour before it’s inhaled, which makes the experience noticeably smoother than it would be otherwise.
Banger is the heat-resistant bowl where the concentrate is vaporized. Quartz bangers heat up quickly and deliver clean, flavour-forward vapour. Titanium bangers are more durable and hold heat longer, which some users prefer for lower-temperature dabbing. Both work well — the choice comes down to personal preference and usage habits.
Butane torch is what heats the banger. It’s important to use butane specifically. Propane torches burn at much higher temperatures, can damage your equipment, and make temperature control significantly harder. A reliable butane torch gives you the controlled, even heat you need for a consistent experience.
Dab tool is a small metal or glass wand used to pick up and place concentrate onto the heated banger. The right tip shape depends on the texture you’re working with: a pointed tip handles shatter well, while a flatter scoop is easier for wax, rosin, or sauce-style concentrates.
Carb cap is a small cap that fits over the banger while you inhale. It regulates airflow and traps heat inside the banger, which allows for more complete vaporization at lower temperatures. The result is smoother vapour and better flavour. It’s not strictly required to get started, but it makes a noticeable difference and is worth including in your setup from the beginning.
How to Take a Dab: Step by Step
Once your tools are ready and your concentrate is selected, the process is repeatable and straightforward.
Start with a small amount. Load roughly a grain-of-rice-sized portion onto your dab tool. Concentrates are potent, and you can always take more later. Starting small gives you the opportunity to gauge the effects before deciding whether to go further.
Heat the banger. Hold the flame of your butane torch directly on the banger for approximately 20 to 45 seconds, depending on the size and material of the banger. Quartz typically heats faster than titanium.
Let the banger cool. This is the step most beginners skip, and it’s the most important one. A freshly torched banger is far too hot — dabbing at that temperature scorches the concentrate, destroys the terpenes, and produces a harsh, flavourless hit. Waiting 30 seconds to a full minute after removing the flame allows the banger to drop into a lower, smoother temperature range. Titanium bangers often need closer to a full minute. When in doubt, wait a little longer.
Apply the concentrate and inhale. Touch your dab tool to the inside of the banger and swirl the concentrate around as it vaporizes. Inhale slowly and steadily through the rig.
Cap it. Place the carb cap over the banger as you inhale to trap the heat and fully vaporize the remaining concentrate. This improves both efficiency and flavour.
Wait before taking more. Concentrate effects can set in quickly, but give yourself a few minutes to assess before loading another dab. Starting conservatively on your first session makes the whole experience more manageable and more enjoyable.
Common Beginner Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Chasing the highest THC number on the shelf. Potency is easy to read on a label, but more isn’t automatically better — especially if you’re new to concentrates. Starting with a moderate amount of a well-reviewed product is a more reliable path to a good first experience than jumping straight to the most powerful option available.
Overheating the banger. Hotter is not better in dabbing. Excessive heat destroys terpenes, which are the compounds responsible for flavour and aroma, and produces a harsh, unpleasant hit. Letting the banger cool adequately before applying your concentrate is what separates a good dab from an unpleasant one.
Storing concentrates poorly. Concentrates are sensitive to light, heat, and air. Keep them in their original airtight, child-resistant packaging in a cool, dark spot. For terpene-rich formats like live resin or rosin, refrigerator storage can help extend freshness and preserve the aromatic profile over time.
Taking too much for a first session. The effects of concentrates can be significantly more intense than dried flower, and they can set in quickly. A conservative first dab followed by a proper wait period is always the right approach.
Reading a Concentrate Label
Canadian cannabis concentrate labels follow the same standardized format as other regulated products. The most important numbers are Total THC and Total CBD, which tell you the potency of the product before you handle it. A distillate showing 80% Total THC is a very different product from a rosin at 65% Total THC, and knowing that before you load your dab tool is how you avoid taking on more than intended.
Beyond potency, the label also shows the extract type, lot number, packaged-on date, and the licensed producer. All concentrates sold through licensed retailers like The Purple Leaf have been tested and verified, so the numbers on the label reflect actual measured content rather than estimates.
Frequently Asked Questions About Dabbing
How do I compare two concentrates fairly?
Lead with Total THC and Total CBD percentages, then consider the texture and extract type. Two products with similar potency can feel noticeably different depending on whether the terpene profile has been preserved. Live resin and distillate at the same THC percentage are genuinely different experiences.
Can I use any torch for dabbing?
No. Use butane only. Propane torches burn at a much higher temperature, can damage quartz bangers over time, and make it significantly harder to control the temperature of your dab. A quality butane torch is a straightforward investment that protects your equipment and improves every session.
How do I avoid taking too much?
Start with a grain-of-rice-sized portion, let the banger cool properly before applying it, and wait several minutes after your first dab before deciding whether to take more. Concentrates are potent, and the effects can arrive faster than you expect. Patience at the beginning of a session is always the right call.
Do I need a carb cap?
Not strictly, but it improves the experience enough that it’s worth including from the start. A carb cap allows for full vaporization at lower temperatures, which means smoother vapour and better-preserved flavour compared to dabbing without one.
What’s the best concentrate for a first-time dabber?
Wax or crumble is often recommended for beginners because the soft, scoopable texture is easier to handle with a dab tool than brittle shatter or sticky live resin. From there, exploring live resin for flavour or rosin for a solvent-free option gives you a natural progression as you get comfortable with the format.
The Bottom Line
Dabbing is a precise, efficient, and genuinely flavourful way to consume cannabis concentrates once you understand the tools and the process. The learning curve is mostly front-loaded — once you know how to heat and cool a banger correctly, load a conservative amount, and use a carb cap, the rest becomes a consistent and repeatable routine. Start small, be patient with temperature, and give the effects time to arrive before deciding to take more.
