A bong is one of the most effective and popular ways to consume cannabis flower — producing a smoother, cooler, and more filtered hit than a joint or a pipe, and delivering effects quickly enough to manage your dose in real time. If you’ve never used one before, the setup can look more complicated than it actually is. Once you understand the components and the basic process, it becomes straightforward.
This guide covers exactly how to use a bong — what each part does, how to pack and light it correctly, how to clear the chamber, and practical tips for getting the best experience from every session.
Understanding the Parts of a Bong
Before covering the process, knowing what each component does makes the whole thing easier to follow.
The base is the bottom chamber that holds the water. It filters and cools the smoke as it passes through, producing a significantly smoother draw than dry smoking.
The downstem is a narrow tube that extends from the bowl through the water in the base. Smoke from the bowl travels down through the downstem and bubbles through the water below.
The bowl is the funnel-shaped attachment that holds your ground cannabis. It sits in the downstem and is removable — removing it is how you clear the chamber at the end of a hit.
The carb hole is a small hole on the side of the bong body, present on some models. Covering it while you draw and releasing it to clear the chamber is an alternative to a removable bowl. Most quality bongs use a removable bowl rather than a carb hole.
The neck is the tube that connects the base chamber to the mouthpiece. Smoke travels up through the neck when you inhale.
The mouthpiece is the opening at the top of the neck where you place your lips to inhale.
The percolator (if present) is an additional water filtration component inside the bong body that further diffuses and cools the smoke. More percolation generally means a smoother draw.

What You Need Before You Start
Before your first session, gather the following.
A bong. Browse our bongs section for available options.
Ground cannabis flower. You need ground flower — not whole buds — for an even, consistent burn. Browse our flower menu including indica, sativa, and hybrid strains at The Purple Leaf.
A grinder. Ground flower burns far more evenly and efficiently than hand-broken flower. Browse our grinders section for available options.
A lighter or hemp wick. A standard lighter works. Hemp wick produces a cooler flame with no butane flavour interference — the preferred choice for flavour-conscious users. Browse our lighters and lighter fluid section.
Water. Room temperature water for the base chamber.

Step-by-Step — How to Use a Bong
Step 1 — Fill the Base With Water
Pour water into the bong through the mouthpiece at the top until it covers the bottom of the downstem by approximately 1–2 centimetres. The downstem should be submerged in water — this is what creates the filtration and bubbling when you draw.
How much water matters. Too little and the smoke doesn’t filter through water properly, producing a harsher hit. Too much and water can splash up into the neck and into your mouth during a draw — unpleasant and something worth avoiding.
If your bong has a percolator, fill until that chamber is also covered with water.
A simple test: take a gentle draw without any flower loaded. If water splashes up into the neck, pour a small amount out. If you hear and feel good bubbling with no splashing, the water level is correct.
Step 2 — Grind Your Cannabis
Use your grinder to break down your cannabis flower to a consistent, medium-fine texture. The goal is an even grind that allows airflow through the bowl without being so fine that the ground flower is pulled through the downstem into the water.
A medium grind — similar in consistency to coarse coffee grounds — is the practical target. Browse our flower menu and grinders at The Purple Leaf for available options.
Step 3 — Pack the Bowl
Gently place your ground flower into the bowl. For your first time or if you’re a lower-tolerance user, pack less than you think you need — a loosely packed, half-full bowl is a better starting point than a tightly packed full bowl. Overpacking restricts airflow and makes the bowl harder to clear; underpacking is easily corrected.
Pack it firmly enough that the flower doesn’t fall through, but not so tightly that you can’t draw air through it. A gentle finger press to slightly compress the surface is usually sufficient.
Corner the bowl. When you light the bowl, apply the flame only to one small corner of the surface rather than torching the entire top. This preserves the unburned green surface for subsequent hits — a basic courtesy in social sessions and good practice even alone, as fresh green hits consistently taste and feel better than fully charred ones.
Step 4 — Position Yourself Correctly
Before you light, make sure you’re in a comfortable, stable position. Place your mouth over the mouthpiece — not inside it, but creating a seal around the opening with your lips. Your dominant hand holds the lighter, and your other hand steadies the bong.
Step 5 — Light and Inhale Simultaneously
Apply the lighter to the corner of the bowl while simultaneously drawing breath through the mouthpiece. You don’t need to inhale forcefully — a slow, steady draw is sufficient to pull the flame down into the flower and start the combustion.
As you draw, you’ll see smoke building in the chamber and neck of the bong. Keep drawing until you have the amount of smoke you want in the chamber — for a first-time or lower-tolerance user, a small to moderate amount is the right starting point. Don’t fill the entire chamber with dense smoke on your first hit.
Step 6 — Clear the Chamber
Once you have the desired amount of smoke in the chamber, remove the bowl from the downstem. This opens the airflow completely, allowing you to inhale all the smoke in the chamber in a single smooth breath.
Inhale fully and steadily to clear the chamber. For beginners specifically — inhale what feels comfortable and let the rest go if it’s too much. There’s no requirement to clear a completely full chamber in one breath.
If your bong has a carb hole rather than a removable bowl, release your finger from the carb hole at this point to open the airflow and clear the chamber.
Step 7 — Exhale and Assess
Exhale normally. Effects from a bong hit typically arrive within 2–5 minutes. Wait at least 10 minutes before deciding whether to take another hit, particularly if it’s your first session or you’re trying a new strain. Bongs deliver THC efficiently — giving your first hit time to take effect before adding more is the most straightforward way to avoid consuming more than you intended.
Practical Tips for Better Bong Sessions
Change the water regularly. Stale bong water produces harsh, unpleasant-tasting smoke and develops an unmistakeable odour. Fresh water for every session — or at minimum, every few sessions — makes a noticeable difference to the experience.
Add ice for a cooler hit. If your bong has ice notches — small protrusions inside the neck designed to hold ice cubes — add a few cubes before your session. Ice-cooled smoke is noticeably smoother and less harsh on the throat, particularly for larger hits.
Clean your bong regularly. Resin and tar accumulate quickly in the bowl, downstem, and base. A dirty bong produces progressively harsher, worse-tasting smoke. Weekly cleaning with isopropyl alcohol and warm water rinse keeps your piece performing at its best. Browse our cleaner products at The Purple Leaf for specialised glass-cleaning solutions.
Don’t pack the bowl too tightly. Restricted airflow is the most common cause of a frustrating, hard-to-draw bong session. A loosely packed bowl that lights easily and draws smoothly beats a densely packed one every time.
Choose the right bowl size for your tolerance. Most bongs come with a standard bowl size, but smaller replacement bowls are available for lower-tolerance users who want more precise dose control. Browse our pipes and glass accessories for available options.
Use quality flower. Well-grown, properly cured cannabis flower produces significantly better-tasting bong hits than dried-out or poorly cured product. Browse our full flower menu for available strains across quality grades.
Common Bong Mistakes — And How to Avoid Them
Too much water. Results in water splashing into the neck and your mouth. Test the level before loading any flower and adjust accordingly.
Grinding too fine. Very finely ground flower can be drawn through the downstem into the water. Use a medium grind and if needed, place a small piece of slightly larger flower at the base of the bowl to act as a filter.
Drawing too hard. Hard, fast draws make the bowl burn hotter and produce harsher smoke. Slow, steady draws give the water more time to filter and cool the smoke.
Not clearing the chamber. Leaving stale smoke sitting in the chamber between hits is a waste and produces a harsh, degraded hit if you draw again without clearing. Clear the chamber fully on each hit or remove it and allow it to disperse naturally.
Packing a full bowl as a beginner. A large, full bowl produces significantly more smoke than a new user needs or wants. Pack lightly, start conservatively, and build from there.
Bong vs Other Consumption Methods
Bong vs joint: A bong produces a smoother, water-cooled hit and delivers THC more efficiently per amount of flower used. A joint is more portable, social, and requires no additional equipment. Browse our pre-rolls for the most convenient joint-format alternative.
Bong vs pipe: Both are smoke-based consumption methods. A bong’s water filtration produces a smoother experience. A pipe is more compact, portable, and requires less preparation. Browse our pipes and glass accessories.
Bong vs vaporizer: A vaporizer heats flower without combustion — no smoke, fewer combustion byproducts, and a more terpene-forward flavour profile. A bong involves combustion but delivers the familiar smoking experience many users prefer. Browse our vapes section for vaping alternatives.
Bong vs edibles: A bong delivers effects within minutes and lasts 1–3 hours. Edibles take 30 minutes to 2 hours and last 4–8 hours. Browse our edibles menu for the long-duration alternative.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you use a bong for the first time? Fill the base with water covering the downstem by 1–2 cm, grind your cannabis, pack the bowl lightly, place your mouth over the mouthpiece, light a corner of the bowl while drawing steadily, remove the bowl to clear the chamber, and inhale. Wait 10 minutes before assessing whether you want more. Browse our bongs and flower menu at The Purple Leaf.
How much water goes in a bong? Enough to cover the bottom of the downstem by approximately 1–2 centimetres. Test by drawing gently without flower — good bubbling with no splashing means the level is correct.
Do you need to grind cannabis for a bong? Yes. Ground flower burns more evenly, draws more easily, and produces better-tasting smoke than hand-broken buds. Browse our grinders at The Purple Leaf.
How do you clean a bong? Rinse with warm water, then soak or shake with isopropyl alcohol to dissolve resin buildup. Rinse thoroughly with warm water before the next use. Browse our cleaner products for specialised cleaning solutions.
What is the best cannabis flower to use in a bong? Any properly grown, well-cured flower works well in a bong. Quality flower — particularly AAA and AAAA grades — produces noticeably better-tasting hits than budget grades due to their richer terpene content. Browse our full flower menu at thepurple-leaf.com.
